The WCO will kick off with an extensive opening ceremony which includes the awarding of excellence medals. Before embarking on a new year of research on bone diseases, the past year is wrapped up. A recap of the best clinical papers of 2017 will be presented. This kick-off is followed by three days of symposia, presentations and scientific sessions. These will cover a broad range of topics, including healthy aging, new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, and relationships between bone diseases and other disorders or diet.

Of over 1,500 submitted abstracts, ImageBiopsy Lab’s paper “Combining fractal- and entropy-based bone texture analysis for the prediction of Osteoarthritis: data from the Multicenter Osteoarthritis study (MOST)” has been selected for both an oral and a poster presentation. The goal of this paper was to develop a novel method for predicting OA by assessing the bone micro architecture simply from X-rays. This is achieved by an innovative fractal- and entropy-based analysis. In combination with the joint space width and area, the prediction worked significantly better than using joint space measures and clinical features alone.
